Revision Urethroplasty is a secondary reconstructive operation performed on the urethra to treat a recurrent stricture or complications following previous urethroplasty. These may include recurrent narrowing, fistula formation, graft failure, or persistent voiding dysfunction.
Due to scar tissue formation, disrupted tissue planes, and altered anatomy from earlier surgery, revision procedures are significantly more complex and require advanced surgical expertise and a wide repertoire of reconstructive techniques. Grafting with buccal mucosa may be necessary when there is insufficient healthy urethral tissue for primary repair. Patients are generally advised to wait at least six months after their last operation before undergoing revision surgery to allow for adequate tissue healing and optimal surgical planning.
Revision urethroplasty demands proficiency across the full spectrum of urethral reconstruction techniques to address the unique anatomical challenges resulting from prior interventions.
Post-operative care follows a structured recovery protocol. The urethral catheter is removed after a peri-catheter urethrogram confirms satisfactory healing at two weeks. Surgical success is evaluated at three months with a follow-up urethrogram.
