Bladder instillation with Hyacyst® is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to treat bladder pain syndrome (BPS), interstitial cystitis (IC), and other chronic forms of cystitis where the bladder’s protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer is thought to be damaged or deficient.
Hyacyst® is a sterile solution of sodium hyaluronate that works physically (not pharmacologically) to temporarily restore the GAG layer of the bladder lining, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. The procedure is well tolerated and suitable for regular outpatient administration.
The instillation is performed by Dr. Daniela Andrich in the treatment room at The Shard. After emptying the bladder, local anaesthetic gel (Instillagel®) is applied for comfort. A sterile 12F catheter is inserted using aseptic technique, and Hyacyst® is gently instilled.
The solution should be retained for at least 30 minutes, or longer if comfortable. The procedure takes 10–15 minutes and no recovery time is required.
